Maeloc, the only Spanish ecological cider at BioFach
This week our Galician ecological cider, Maeloc, will be present at Biofach, the largest ecological products fair the world, which will be taking place in Nuremberg (Germany) until Saturday.
There are 2,325 exhibitors from around the world presenting food, packaging, and even household goods that respect the environment.
Maeloc ciders are the only Spanish ciders that are present at this international event to which 50,000 professionals from 130 countries are expected to attend. La cider company, located in Chantada (Lugo), will take advantage of the event to make its Sweet, Natural, and Extra ciders (all certified as ecological) known, within the frame of CRAEGA, Consello Regulador da Agricultura Ecolóxica de Galicia (Regulatory Council for Galician Ecological Agriculture)
The presentation at Biofach is the result of hard work that has been carried out by Maeloc in recent years to boost the harvesting of ecological apples, working side by side with 150 local farmers involved in the project. This has meant that, currently, 30% of cider apples bought and processed by Maeloc to make its ciders has obtained the certificate issued by the Consejo Regulador de Agricultura Ecológica en Galicia (Regulatory Council for Galician Ecological Agriculture).
Cider is a product that is traditionally associated with other regions, but few people know that a great part of the production of cider apples in Spain comes from Galicia.
The Maeloc Project.
In addition, the Maeloc Research Project has been working for a number of years to catalogue and identify autochthonous cider apple varieties and describe them scientifically. The aim of this project is to make information about the best varieties of apple to cultivate available to Galician farmers and, hence, get the best yield from their lands.
